DOT announces $600 million in grants

WASHINGTON, DC -- The Department of Transportation announced today more TIGER II (Transportation Investments Generating Economic Recovery) grants which are heavy on mass transit and non-trucking freight infrastructure projects. The projects prioritize public transportation and job creation, but also target "fix-it-first" projects for crumbling roads and bridges.

The DOT received nearly 1,000 applications requesting $19 billion with only 75 projects being approved. Atlanta, GA is a big winner, receiving $47.6 million for streetcars. Second largest grant went to Fort Worth, TX for repair and expansion of a freight rail system.

Roughly 29 percent of TIGER II money goes for road projects, 26 percent for transit, 20 percent for rail projects, 16 percent for ports, four percent for bicycle and pedestrian projects and five percent for planning projects.
