WASHINGTON, DC -- Surface transportation between the United States and its NAFTA partners Canada and Mexico rose 18.8 percent higher in July 2010 than in July 2009, reaching $61.3 billion, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation. "Surface transportation" consists of freight movements by truck, rail and pipeline, with 84.6 percent of the total being truck freight.
The value of U.S. surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico in July was up 23.3 percent compared to July 2005, and up 45.6 percent compared to July 2000.
For the decade 2000-2010, imports were up 34.5 percent while exports were up 60.7 percent. Michigan leads all states in trade with Canada and Texas leads all states in trade with Mexico.
