A stretch of toll road between Austin and San Antonio is the first in the nation of what some experts see as a likely trend--the 85 mph speed limit. As federal funds dry up for roadways, higher speed limits may be viewed as a value-added service for toll roads. Safety advocates are alarmed, but an increase from 65 to 70 mph on the Ohio Turnpike last Spring resulted in the lowest fatality rate ever recorded.
