Truckers, others react to DOT's Mexican trucking proposal

GRAIN VALLEY, MO -- The largest trade association representing truckers reacted to the U.S. Department of Transportation's announced intention to lay the groundwork for a program to open American roads to trucking companies from Mexico.

'With so much focus in Washington on creating jobs, it's a bit shocking that the administration would pursue a program that can only rob U.S. drivers of their jobs,' said Todd Spencer, Executive Vice President of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association.

Manufacturing interests in the U.S. are expressing relief that Mexican tariffs imposed nearly two years ago will end and could boost exports south of the border.

Doug Goudie at Shopfloor.com stated:

"For two years, manufacturers around the United States have faced these retaliatory tariffs on their exports to Mexico. As a result, our competitors from Canada, Latin America, China and elsewhere have had an opportunity to increase their market share in Mexico at our expense."
