Oversize load supporters and opponents face off at hearing in Boise

BOISE, ID -- The Idaho Transportation Department on Friday heard arguments between ConocoPhillips and environmental opponents over the oil giant's plans to ship four oversize loads 172 miles over U.S. 12 to Billings, Montana. The outcome of the hearing could set a precedent for future oversize shipments in the area.
The four loads--four sections of two large coke drums--are too tall for highway underpasses and too wide for the railroad, thus the route over Highway 12 and across Montana was chosen. ConocoPhillips coordinated with officials for three years to make the shipments which now sit at Lewiston, ID.

In state courts, opponents have denounced the loads, saying they present a threat to tourism and public safety.
The already-issued-permits allows for the loads to travel at night. The refinery in Billings employs more than 400 workers and supplies fuel throughout the region.
