Prices of used trucks up, inventory remains tight

COLUMBUS, IN -- The average retail sales price of Class 8 used vehicles sold in September increased three percent month-over-month to $42,100 according to a ACT Research Co. (ACT) press release.

ACT also reported that the number of units sold declined by five percent month-over-month as dealers reported tightening supply of late-model equipment. The report covers model classes 3 through 8.

“Having fewer than necessary trucks of the right specifications is exacerbating the shortage of equipment and helping to drive up prices,” said Steve Tam, vice president commercial vehicle sector with ACT.

“Despite the lower number of transactions compared to August, all three used truck sales channels (auction, retail and wholesale) are well ahead of last year’s pace on a year-to-date basis," added Tam.

Used commercial truck prices continue gains

COLUMBUS, IN -- Reported sales of used Class 8 commercial vehicles were up 55% in August compared to the prior year on a “same dealer” basis, according to industry analyst firm ACT Research Co. ACT further reported that the average price paid for a used Class 8 truck continued to move slightly higher.

Sales of medium-duty used trucks in July were 19.5% ahead of the same month in 2009, but slipped to -2.4% in August compared with the same month in 2009, said Steve Tam, vice president.
