Senators urge LaHood to consider safety in fuel rules

WASHINGTON, DC -- In a letter obtained by the Detroit News, Sens. Mark Pryor, D-Ark., and Roger Wicker, R-Miss., wrote Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood on Wednesday saying that the 2017-2025 fuel efficiency standards should not adversely impact safety, citing the lowest traffic fatality statistics since 1949.

"As NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) works to set fuel economy standards for 2017 and beyond, it is our expectation that the agency will do the necessary research to protect consumers from any degradation in motor vehicle safety."
