Exxon makes $18 million deal for CT rest area cleanup

"As a new vendor works to overhaul and redevelop the state's 23 highway rest plazas, ExxonMobil has agreed to pay $18 million of the estimated $25.8 million cost to clean up fuel and other contamination on the properties it operated for more than two decades, the state Department of Transportation announced Wednesday."

The settlement was jointly negotiated by the DOT, the federal Department of Environmental Protection and ExxonMobil, which leased and operated the plazas since 1982.

All 23 rest plaza sites on Interstate 95, the Merritt Parkway, and I-395 have contamination above the state's legal levels, according to DOT spokesman Judd Everhart."
