EU fuel tax proposals to raise diesel prices

"Brussels - The European Commission proposed Wednesday a more environmentally friendly system of taxation on fuel that could lead to higher diesel pump prices in about half of the European Union's 27 member states by 2013.

The commission said the current rules - which set the minimum taxation levels on fuels based on their volume - are 'outdated,' because they do not take into account their environmental impact, undermining the EU's targets to reduce emissions of carbon-dioxide (CO2)."
