Better days: an employee appreciation picnic at Freightliner's Cleveland, NC plant in 2007 |
CLEVELAND, NC -- Freightliner Trucks (Daimler Trucks North America) made local headlines throughout the past year -- as they have every year since layoffs in March 2007.
The Cleveland, NC plant is the largest manufacturing plant for the Portland, OR-based Freightliner, producing Class 8 truck models including the Cascadia, Century Class S/T, Columbia, and the Argosy cab-over-engine models. Freightliner also operates a sub-assembly plant in Gastonia and a medium-duty truck plant in Mount Holly.
In the wake of massive layoffs between 2007 and 2009, the company and its UAW union employees agreed on a new labor contract. Threatened strikes were averted, but lawsuits plagued both company and union alike.
In January of 2010, an arbitrator found Daimler violated its labor contract by outsourcing jobs to Mexico. He ordered the company to compensate hundreds of workers.
Of 2,000 workers pink-slipped between 2007 and 2009, more than 500 have since returned to work.
