Fate of Springfield plant uncertain as Navistar, UAW reach agreement

WARRENVILLE, IL -- Navistar International and UAW employees reached a new four-year contract on Saturday replacing one which expired Oct. 1. UAW members from eight locals in six facilities voted Saturday, accepting the contract 73 percent to 27 percent.

The union only represents 2,000 out of Navistar’s estimated 16,000 employees. Of those 2,000 workers about 500 are on lay-off, 250 alone at the Springfield, Ohio plant.

The contract allows the company to change the vehicle types produced at its plants instead of using dedicated facilities, a sore point to workers at Springfield who saw production of medium-duty trucks shifted to Texas and Mexico during negotiations.

Springfield’s Local 402 members voted to reject the contract 51 percent to 48 percent. It is unclear how many workers there will be called back.
